Trauma-Informed Yoga

Trauma-informed yoga is an approach to yoga that holds intentional awareness and understanding around the specific needs, symptoms, and sensitivities to the impact of trauma on the entire mind-body system.

The principles of trauma-informed yoga are based on safety, choice, and empowerment and takes into account the potential triggers and sensitivities that trauma survivors might experience.

It’s not a particular style of yoga, but rather a considerate approach to yoga through the lens of caring for trauma survivors to restore your mind and body connection to a safe state of balance.

Trauma-informed yoga gives you choice, control, and consent.

The goal of trauma-informed yoga is to give YOU your power back to facilitate healing and free agency over your body and mind while avoiding re-traumatization that can be associated with personal space, language, and boundaries.

Led by trauma-informed instructors, we’re trained to be aware of potential effects and triggers, and adapt our teaching style to create a safe and supportive environment for you to enjoy and embrace movement through yoga.

In our classes and workshops you can expect to…

  • Learn and practice mindfulness-based skills for nervous system regulation, emotional awareness, and interoception which is the conscious and subconscious awareness of the senses and internal signals of the physiological body

  • Experience inclusive and accessible options for all students regardless of trauma history or level of experience with yoga, including modifications for poses to accommodate different needs

  • Be encouraged to make decisions about your practice and body with autonomy

  • Hear inclusive and non-triggering language in instruction with respect for your personal space and boundaries

  • Learn to incorporate breathwork for emotional regulation and enjoy a slow pace that avoids rapid or abrupt movements that could be potentially triggering

  • Practice poses that promote grounding, stability, and relaxation so you can reclaim your mind-body connection in a safe and supportive space

What is interoception?

Interoception is the ability to perceive and be aware of the internal sensations and signals within your body, and plays a key role in trauma-informed yoga.

Trauma survivors sometimes dissociate from their bodies as a coping mechanism which can lead to consciously or subconsciously suppressing our bodies cues like hunger, thirst, pain, feeling your heartbeat, or other bodily processes.

Being unaware of our bodies’ natural cues can affect how we regulate our emotions, make decisions, and maintain our overall well-being.

By cultivating interoceptive awareness through trauma-informed yoga, you can reconnect with your body and move towards restorative healing.

This might look like becoming more aware of bodily sensations, recognizing physical and emotional cues that signal distress, notice when you feel a loss of control, or when boundaries are being crossed.

When you become aware of these things you can take the next step to address them through self-regulation techniques and mindfulness practices.

We strive to create a safe environment to support you while prioritizing choice and consent, allowing you to tune into your own comfort levels and express your boundaries and preferences.

We’re here to help take care of your body and mind in a safe, trauma-informed space.
